I'd recommend reaching out to our support team for help with this. You may not be able to send SMTP email without getting your mail server whitelisted by our team, but it is strange that receiving email also isn't working.
You can simply send an email through to [email protected] (while not on the VPN) and we'll help work out exactly what's going on here. If you've got them, I'd recommend sending through the exact error messages with the email as well.
I believe that I fixed my issues. It indeed was port forwarding. I had to set up a static network IP address on my Mac and then do port forwarding on my Apple Airport Extreme.
