Newbie trying to configure with KII Pro

Hi,

I hope someone can help me, I am pretty new to Android and PIA. Anyway, I bought the following the other day

I wanted to set it up so that it automatically uses a VPN in the background without me having to do anything. So, I went into the configuration screen and there is a VPN option and entered the details and everything worked fine. However, this meant I needed to manually turn on the VPN every time I turned on the Android TV.

I subsequently found there was an "Always On" option in the same section of the configuration, so attempted to enter the details in there. I had a bit of trouble getting this to work but found some instructions here

After following these the device connected to the VPN without issue. However, when I rebooted the device it didn't automatically connect and I haven't managed to work out how to get this to happen in these configuration settings.

I then contacted support and they directed me to the PIA app. I installed this from the store and entered all the configuration details and this connected fine. However, if I set the run at boot option when I turn on my Android TV it brings up a full screen page with the login for PIA. Although I can click the button at this point, it isn't quite a seamless experience, as I then have to switch to a mouse to come out of this screen as the remote buttons won't navigate properly.

So, in summary, I can get it to work with PIA but I cannot get it to work in the background without the user knowing that the VPN is running. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to improve this? Or anything I can try, as I am out of ideas now.

Many thanks in advance!

  • Noticed this thread which seems to sum up the problems associated with "always on". So guess my only route here is hoping that the PIA or OpenVPN client provides the ability to not present a login screen and work in the background

  • OK, I have managed to find a way to get around this. I have installed OpenVPN for Android. This doesn't popup a login box when the machine boots up unlike the PIA app. Therefore, it all works as expected now. Hope this helps someone else in the future.
