How do I tell when it is time to update OpenVPN?

With the PIA app it is straight forward what version I have and if it is current per the PIA website, but not sure where to look and which one to pick when an update is available for OpenVPN, especially when a security update is available (like the introduction of a newer version of OpenSSL for instance).  I see on the OpenVPN website that there is a stable version (The one I am currently using) and a newer version.  Do I wait until the next stable version is released, and do I have to keep on checking once in a while?

Also, how do I determine which version I currently have. The "about" screen doesn't say much?

EDIT:  Well, found  the answer to that one anyway.  In a command prompt type.......

    openvpn --version
