PIA VPN client interferes with native VPN client on MacOS

I had a lot of trouble connecting to my office VPN for a while after I installed PIA.  In addition, applications which needed to use the internet were mysteriously blocked from doing so.  For example mail.app did not download any email for half a day until I turned off PIA VPN.

My company uses a Cisco ASA firewall appliance which manages our business VPN sessions.  With PIA installed, I could not log in the to corporate VPN.  I did not realize this was the problem until recently.  I then followed the instructions to completely remove PIA and rebooted.  After that I had no problem logging in the the Cisco corporate VPN.

Is this a known issue?  Has anyone else noticed the same problem?  Does PIA VPN conflict with or override the native VPN client on MacOS?

THanks for any help.

  • Also, I should have asked whether there is some kind of simple fix for this.
  • And (sorry), can PIA VPN client be completely turned off temporarily while I use the company VPN then turned back on again?
  • You should only run one VPN client at a time.  But no need to remove anything - just to only enable one at a time. Either PIA or the native client, but not both together.
  • Thanks!

How do you enable/disable PIA on MacOS?
