Super slow speeds?

I currently have a 150 MBs connection. I can generally download at about 16mb/s on a given day.

However, when I connect to my VPN, I get only about 2mb/s. This is a config setup through my router using OpenVPN and PIA. Here is my config.

client
dev tun
proto udp
remote us-seattle.privateinternetaccess.com 1197
resolv-retry infinite
nobind
persist-key
persist-tun
cipher aes-256-cbc
auth sha256
tls-client
remote-cert-tls server
auth-user-pass
comp-lzo
verb 1
reneg-sec 0
crl-verify crl.rsa.4096.pem
ca ca.rsa.4096.crt

  • I have also switched between silicon valley and us west, no improvement.
  • I just started having the same issue today. Through the router, the speeds have been abysmal, but when I try it off the client, it's normal speed.

Also, not sure if it was a typo or not, but I believe the port is supposed to be 1198.

I am getting awful speeds lately, they over sold their product and don't have enough bandwidth.  I am getting under 2 megabit download on my 150 megabit pipe...not cool PIA...not cool.

As soon as it turns off...it's back up to my regular speeds.  It's time for refunds or for PIA to fix their speeds.

This is using the client on a windows 10 machine.
  • Does it matter which VPN endpoint you connect to? That is to say, if you connect to a different endpoint, does it affect the speed you are measuring?
  • Yes, I have been experiences super slow speeds in some connections.

This is what my very basic testing has gotten so far - note that I am physically located in Texas (As you can see by the low ping) yet....when not on the VPN my speed is at 50, yet connected to a close connection it drops all the way down to 11.51? I understand that I won't necessarily get the same speed as I do unconnected, but that kind of difference is unacceptable. The only ones I understand are Midwest and Chicago...everything else seems unusually low, especially TX and Cali while all the up speeds are generally around the same speed.
  • Chicago looks good. Use that one.

I have a favorite and maybe once or twice a month it seems congested, so i use one of the others on my 'list'.
  • Seriously, what the hell? This is typical of all the speeds I'm getting in the USA endpoints. I have a 100/10 service plan, and am actually getting 110/10 when I speedtest without PIA. 99% speed dropoff is just ridiculous.

  • You can thank Linus for this.  For real.
  • eh? bau250?  there is also the issue of router CPUs doing all the crypto work and not having crypto offload or speedy crypto instructions. try leaving the router alone and running the tunnel crypto on your 'big rig' instead.
