Asus Merlin Slow PIA Speeds

Hi

I am using an Asus RT-AC3200 with Asus Merlin 380.66
When I connect to PIA on the router my speeds go from 37Mbps to 2Mbps
I have reset the router to default and same issue.
The Setup Guide I am using is
https://helpdesk.privateinternetaccess.com/hc/en-us/articles/227852327-Setting-up-an-Asus-Router-running-Merlin-Firmware

The server I am connecting to is UK London and I have also tried this with Southampton.

Thanks

X

    I have also tried

they all work, just the speeds are very low. I have never had this problem before
  • Hi , I have an Asus RT68U (ac-1900, so less powerful than yours) and use Merlin 380.66 and consistently get 35-40Mb/s download speed from London or Southampton.

so i wouldn't suspect PIA but  your vpn client settings

    have you checked

  • yeah, I don't know what's going on here, but when I first signed up and first setup (also using Asus RT-AC68U with Merlin) my throughput was PERFECT. I haven't made any changes other than the server address because the previous one was being blocked left and right.

Now my throughput is CRIPPLED TO A CRAWL. WTF ?
  • Just changed server address again and now my speeds are back to PERFECT ??? I've tried Eastern then went to Midwest then tired an IP as a server address, now back to midwest.privateinternetaccess.com. These various addresses were made over several months trying to deal with web sites that block PIA servers. Throughput was only crippled in the past day or so. Hope this isn't going to be a chronic sort of issue.

  • ...and now (15mins later) I'm back to 1.35 Mbps from 28 Mbps+ . WHAT IS GOING ON ?

well mine have remained consistently solid for a while now around 35-40 Mb/s if you are to believe ookla gives a reasonable representation

Well, that's the the thing, I've been with PIA for months now. I was amazed that my throughput was essentially unaffected using OpenVPN on my Asus router. For months !

Now all of the sudden, I can't get decent streaming. Now all of the sudden, in just the space of 15mins after changing servers, I've gone from 28Mbps down to 3 or less.

I'm running the latest Merlin firmware. I'm reasonably certain all my settings are correct because I have had months of perfectly satisfactory results (other than websites blocking PIA blacklisted addresses). Something has changed. I've looked to the announcements and I see statements from PIA, but I'm not sure how (or if) any of these may be affecting my setup ??? I'm paying money for this, I want it to work ! I'm perfectly willing to accept some overhead or throughput reduction as part of the price I pay, but right now it is UNACCEPTABLE and I'd like some solutions !!!

Thanks. I've now gone and mimicked your settings (in particular, my "Custom Configuration" section only had two lines in it before). This CC section seems a bit of a mystery. I've seen a few variations of what to put there and I have no idea what they mean/do. But your settings were a little different then mine in a couple of other places as well so I'll give them a try. The settings I had, use to work fine, and those were mimicked from another semi-official post here on PIA. At the moment, using your settings, I'm back to 28Mbps which is great but I need to see how long the improvement lasts. Yesterday I simply changed to a different server address and jump back up to 28, but that only lasted for about 15mins. Thanks again !
  • pleased that your back up to speed, let me know if it sticks !
