DD-WRT and OPENVPN Setup CA Certificate

How do I download this certificate? https://www.privateinternetaccess.com/pages/client-support/dd-wrt-openvpn says to click on this link: https://www.privateinternetaccess.com/openvpn/ca.rsa.2048.crt . When I do it doesn't download, it tries to install it in whatever browser on whatever device I'm using.

I need to get the file so that I can follow these instructions:
  1. Right-Click the ca.rsa.2048 file, and Choose Open With, Then choose Notepad
    DD-WRTOpenVPN5
  2. Highlight the full contents of the ca.rsa.2048 file by pressing Ctrl+A then copy with Ctrl+C
  3. In DD-WRT, Paste, (Ctrl+P) the contents in the CA Cert field. Be sure the entire text gets pasted in, including "-----BEGIN CERTIFICATE-----" and "-----END CERTIFICATE-----".

Thanks for any help.

  • Click on this link...

    https://www.privateinternetaccess.com/openvpn/openvpn.zip

It will download the config files for OpenVPN which contains the file ca.rsa.2048.crt. Then follow the directions as you have them for DD-WRT/OpenVPN.

right click link, save file as
  • I had the same issue as the OP. I right clicked but it would not save file as. It loaded. After that it said it was already loaded. That is why I went to the OpenVPN Config zip file. That solved all my problems. This is why I directed the OP to the OpenVPN config link.

You were correct twice. Thanks. The instructions used to have a good link. I used it several times over a period of years, but someone has messed that up. And evidently support is swamped.

    Thanks!

I went searching for the certificate on my computer to delete it. I could not find it. However, I WAS looking in the wrong place. The certificate resides in your browser. On FireFox it is in Tools|Options|Advanced|Certificates. Look for Private Internet Access. For other browsers, do a google on certificate location on your browser. The serial number is

    Certificate SerialNumber=00 a6 7b 0f 96 2f f3 ba 83

Find it and delete it. You should be able to click on the link in the OP first post for the certificate. However, it does not give you the option to save the certificate. Here is a screen shot.

Your only option is to view. Do not select any of the three options in the box.
  • Yes, I had figured out how to delete the certificate from Firefox.

I had been using PIA on individual devices instead of on my router because about a year ago I moved and had to get a new ISP. When I tried using PIA on the router, I only got about 50% of the download speed I get without it (whether using the VPN on an individual device or not). My upload speed remained the same. I never had that problem with the same equipment on a different cable company. The problem is still there. The new ISP is causing a problem somewhere. I'm not sure if it's DD-WRT, openVPN or what. They work OK as long as I don't use them set up in the router.

    Head scratch.............

My WRT160N is the same way. If OpenVPN is outside the router, normal speeds. However, put OpenVPN via the router, speed dives to around 3Mbps down and 6 Mbps up. Down speed is like 95% for me. I did some research and found that my WRT160N does not have the processing power to handle nominal speeds. Oh well.

The comment on the certificate deletion was more for archive in the event someone else has this problem. I figured that you already knew how to delete the certificate.
  • Both my router and modem were running very consistent 60 + meg downloads on TWC before I moved. I had a 50 meg account but where I lived TWC was very liberal. So I know the equipment shouldn't be my problem. The very independent isp I have now must be doing something weird because I unhooked my setup at one place and brought it straight to the new place and the problem began. The modem is bridged. There may be some tweaks I can do but I don't know what..
