My guess is that they want to avoid the literal truckloads of mail from RIAA etc. that would arrive daily informing them of IPs involved in copyright violations. Granted, PIA could just burn them (or use them as rolling papers - they are in Colorado I think), but it would still be a little annoying.
On the rare occasion I need an open port, I use a Canadian server. I find them to be adequate.
That's exactly why. Nastygrams from every ISP and shady policing agency under the sun would bury PIA. Look on the bright side, it's an extra layer of protection, because legally it's nearly impossible for other countries agencies to prosecute you.
