How to run FTP server from USB drive on OpenVPN /ASUSWRT router?

Hello!
I have a Asus RT-AC5300 that I have connected to PIA via OpenVPN using Asus's VPN option...  Everything works great, but now I no longer have access to my FTP server (WD My Book connected directly to AC5300 via USB port) from WAN.  Is there any way for me to ftp to my server while away from home with the VPN running?

    I have the same problem but with my modem. Because the OpenVPN starts on my machine, the path is encrypted and trying to connect to anything outside that path will not work. I cannot even ping my router because of the encryption. I wonder if you have the same issue even though VPN is on your router.

    I wonder if port forwarding might work for you.
