1 Internet connection, 2 wireless networks

Hi

New on here, but after some advise on setting up a new network setup. I've got a fixed ISP provided router that I currently have connected to an Apple AirPort Extreme creating the wireless network. I also have a LinkSys WRT router that I've flashed to DD-WRT.

On the existing network I have numerous range extenders (airport express), 3 Apple TV's, a couple of smart TV's, Amazon echo etc plus the normal numerous wifi devices.

I currently use a Mac Mini connected to the AirPort Extreme through which the Apple TV's run.

What I want to do is use the DD-WRT router to create a separate VPN network. I want the Mac mini connected to this network but still enable people on the standard network to be able to airplay to the TV's. Also want to be able to switch between the networks on the various devices depending on what I'm doing.

The current plan is to connect both the AirPort Extreme and DD-WRT routers into the ISP LAN ports, but I don't think that will enable cross network airplay ability. Is this correct?

Cheers

This all sounds to me like a routing issue. If I am understanding correctly, you want to use the DD-WRT running OpenVPN and connected to PIA as your secure network. Everything else will use the normal router for TV, Live Streaming, Gaming, or whatever. Is this correct?

I think it would be easier to point everything that "might" use the VPN to the DD-WRT. If you have a device that will never need secure network then have it point to the unsecured router. In those devices that are pointed to the VPN, setup routes for unsecured connections to the unsecured router.

    An example
    Two routers
Router 1 - Unsecured - IP 192.168.1.0/24 Gateway ISP IP address
    Router 2 - Secured - IP 192.168.2.0/24 Gateway Router 1

All devices that might use VPN will use Router 2
All devices that will never use VPN will use Router 1

Those devices that would like to view TV that are setup to use VPN can do one of two things - 1. This is the easiest but not the safest. Have the user connect to Wifi 1. 2. This will require some planning but is the safest. Set up a route to the TV IP address to router 1.

Now, there may be an easier way to do this, but this is how I would proceed to do it. Two separate Wifi Networks, one secure and the other unsecure.

Hope this helps you figure out how you would like to do it.
