PIA Interface Wont Display on Linux

Hi there, I just installed the PIA linux client on Elementary OS (Ubuntu based) according the directions below. I can see the icon in the app launcher but never get the interface to pop up to enter my creds. I also don't get an icon in the notification area to try to configure it so it's basically unusable at this point. Any idea on how to get this fixed?

    is this another instance of the 'missing gconf' (needed package not installed)?

    ps: someone at PIA really needs to do an "ldd" on their software and make sure the installer checks for all the needed libraries!
  • same issue here...  with Elementary OS Loki
  • adding
    XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP=Unity

    as the second line in run.sh may help, @anonyphish

  • I've had trouble for a long time with PIA and elementary OS ver 4.

    At one point I solved it with the XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP=Unity edit, but the indicator icon stopped displaying again.

    The red PIA indicator icon is displayed after my initial boot and is usable as long as I don't open Google Chrome.

    Once Chrome is opened the indicator icon vanishes and stays hidden even if Chrome is closed and the PIA app is selected again from the application menu.

    I don't understand why the app has to be part of the indicator tray in the first place. Can't it be coded like the volume control, where it can be controlled from either the indicator area or through a regular app/program window?

    It's a shame that PIA VPN doesn't play nice with one of the better Linux distros.
