No desktop shortcut or listing on start menu

Did something go wrong with my install or are there no shortcuts to the application created? I had to go digging in the program files folders to locate and start pia_manager.exe.

If shortcuts aren't created then it'd probably be a good thing to actually create them.

  • There should be an icon in the system tray. It might be hidden. You may have to configure it to show all the time. This would be in the system tray configuration for notifications.
  • Hi @Skrybe,

In order to ensure the icon displays all of the time on Windows, you'll need to do the following:

    1. On your desktop, right-click on the Taskbar, and go to "Properties"
    2. On the Taskbar tab, under the Notification Area heading, click "Customize"
    3. Locate our app icon from the list, and select "Always Show" from its drop menu
    4. Click OK to apply the changes.

It should be smooth sailing from there! Please let me know if you have any more questions.
  • Sorry for the delay in replying.

You're missing the point, I turned PIA *OFF* because I don't want it starting all the time (removed it from startup). If I want to use it I'll start it manually. But in order to start it manually I had to locate the exe myself and create a shortcut on the desktop.

I get that you think people will just have it running all the time as soon as windows boots up, but not everyone wants that. Just add a "Do you want a shortcut on your desktop/start menu" like every other app does.
  • There definitely should be some entries in the start menu for it, along with an option to reinstall the TAP driver as well as uninstall:

What version of the app did you install?
  • I'm not sure, I think it was two versions ago (I'm now on v79). I am running Windows 8.1 64bit not Windows 10 if that makes any difference. Maybe something did go wrong during the original install and the shortcuts weren't created for some reason.

Next update I'll do an uninstall of PIA and install the new version fresh to see if it adds the shortcuts. If it doesn't I'll post again.

    Thanks for your time.
  • Hmm, I'd have to test on Windows 8.1. I vaguely remember Windows 8.1 having changed things with regards to how start menu entries are managed which changed again in Windows 10 in an incompatible manner, so it may be that we don't install the shortcuts in the right place in 8.1.
  • @Skrybe Are you using the administrator account on your computer? PIA installs the Start Menu/desktop shortcuts for the admin account but not for regular users.
  • @elfaconeri: Yes I have admin rights.

@Max-P: There's definitely no PIA folder anywhere in the All Programs on the Start Menu. Something that just occurred to me, I use Classic Start Menu not the standard Windows one. That said, I've never seen a problem with any other applications when I've installed. Like I said, next update I'll do a clean install and see if the shortcuts appear then.

  • Ok, Just installed v80 and paid special attention to the install. There was a checkbox about adding a desktop icon (nothing about start menu). I ticked the desktop icon and it definitely added that as a shortcut. I don't see a Private internet access *folder* on the start menu, but I do now get two private internet access shortcuts if I start typing "private" in the "search programs" box on the start menu. So there are definitely links available now. Not sure what happened in the past, but it's certainly working now.
