Choosing custom DNS servers

Hi,
Trying to setup my Raspberry Pi as a VPN gateway but I’m wondering if it’s possible to route DNS requests through DNS servers of my choice instead of the PIA ones.

read up on OpenVPN "push filters"
  • Hello, You can use what ever DNS servers that you would like, however we suggest that you use our servers as they will always be the fastest because they are hosted locally to each gateway. If you would like to use different DNS you can use Openvpn profiles, by default our Linux application does not overwrite the DNS. Here is a link to an article that provides all setups: https://helpdesk.privateinternetaccess.com/hc/en-us/articles/115000244471-setups#openvpn

well, @PIAKaneesha , that sure is a blizzard of links and stuff. But it doesn't drill down to exactly the configuration section involved.

excerpt from OpenVPN captured moments ago:
    Fri Sep 29 12:49:08 2017 SENT CONTROL [59fb4f66abcc168e87cbb428cda749bb]: 'PUSH_REQUEST' (status=1)
    Fri Sep 29 12:49:08 2017 PUSH: Received control message: 'PUSH_REPLY,redirect-gateway def1,dhcp-option DNS 209.222.18.222,dhcp-option DNS 209.222.18.218,ping 10,comp-lzo no,route 10.79.10.1,topology net30,ifconfig 10.79.10.6 10.79.10.5,auth-token 7WIOyAPnMnQpXLfltCKwsKuWfgbqZcVV8P9q4Ank5Ls='
as can be observed in the second line, the PIA server pushes DNS information.

the PIA client may either filter out the pushed DNS info or use the --up/--down script facility to substitute locally set DNS info.
