Gmail/G Suite in a Mail Client over VPN

I have both Gmail and G Suite (Gmail for a custom domain and email address) accounts I access through a desktop mail client. I can receive emails just fine, but sending them gives me errors and no email is sent. I submitted a ticket and requested whitelisting, but got this reply:

I apologize, but your mail server: is configured such that whitelisting is not possible. At this time you will need to disconnect from the VPN to send mail over that account, or else use web-based email. Sorry for any inconvenience. Please let me know if you have any questions.
Is this for real? Is there no way other way than to use the web interface for Gmail?
