INstalled using pia-v72-installer-linux.sh , subject says all

make sure you have the packages "net-tools", "libnss3" and "libgconf-2-4" installed.
you probably also need to add
XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP=${XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP/:*/}
near the top of run.sh

I've added this and still no luck. Seems Gnome has removed the old tray - some people have had luck with
https://extensions.gnome.org/extension/1031/topicons/
but it is not supported anymore

you probably also need to add XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP=${XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP/:*/} near the top of run.sh
