Private Internet Access Proxy Now Available (Now Open)

  • I'm trying to use uTorrent with pia's proxy.  I can't get incoming connections and can't connect to the trackers (so my downloads won't start).

My work around is to VPN to privateinternetaccess, starting uTorrent's downloads and leave them on for a couple of minutes.  While still on the VPN connection, make uTorrent to start using the proxy.  Now I can exit the VPN client.  While this works and gives me decent download/upload speeds, it is not ideal.

Is there a way to get incoming connections? (Assuming this is what doesn't allow uTorrent to the trackers)
Is there anything else that could be causing this problem?
  • Hi,

I'm aware that there are shared IP's and no logging when using the VPN service, but I would appreciate if one of the staff could confirm whether there is any logging when using the socks5 protocol on its own and whether shared IP's are used?

    Thanks.

If you are talking about the proxy then yes it does have shared ips.
  • and what of logging? is there any logging of the socks5 proxy connections/traffic?

No logging whatsoever, however, vpn is recommended. If you take a look at the utorrent thread, I have listed all the ips of the proxy in the first post.
  • Yeah i've read that thread, thanks, it was most informative regarding the use of settings, which are working perfectly. Thanks for clarifying the situation regarding logging too.
  • +1 for a US proxy, please

+1 for a US proxy, please
    Yes please! +1
  • We need a US proxy... For the last month or so, service has been intermittent. For users who can't use the official client with it's feature to disable traffic if the proxy dies, this can be seriously problematic.

A US proxy would solve this issue because if the proxy went down, all configured clients would lose connectivity.

PLEASE add a us proxy or I will be forced to take my business elsewhere.

Also could you leave this bit out when registering it? :D

  • I've read this page plus the pages regarding DNS leaks (and problems using the DNS Leak Protection option.)  The problems, plus the warning it gives, in using the option have put me off checking the DNS Leak Protection box.

I've used the check for DNS leak and it shows my providers IP address but not my specific IP address.  So, a DNS leak exists but I'm not sure what it's worth to anyone trying to find my IP address.

    Questions:
If I open the VPN first, then open Utorrent using the proxy and begin torrenting:
    1) Is my torrenting safe because it is encrypted going through the VPN before hitting the proxy server?
    2) Do DNS leaks found in the DNS leak test matter in this situation?  Or are the leaks happening when surfing other websites, not torrenting.
  • DNS leaks can happen anywhere where resolving hostnames is done, which includes your torrent client.
    1) Yes. Although, when using a full VPN connection, the proxy is not needed.
    2) The launch order of applications will affect how DNS resolution happens. If you started the browser before the VPN application, the results of the leaktest website shouldn't matter that much.
However, I'm not sure how the PIA app implements leak protection, so you'd have to decide for yourself if you're comfortable with it.

  • Is anyone else having issues with the proxy today? I'm getting no throughput... I wish there was an alternative proxy through PIA...
  • Bump. :( I hope you are at least considering a US proxy as I'm sure lots of your customers are using services like Netflix.
Have some patience, they will announce a US proxy if its in the pipeline.
I can be patient but no one answered, and I know Support is there.
Canadian Netflix sucks and the WD TV box can only do proxy, not VPN.
    Please :)
  • Does it mean I can use proxy with only the rowser without having to connect whole PC through vpn?

I could not find any instruction to configure a browser (firefox/chrome).
I could enter the proxy url/port but it doe not work. Ho/where do I enter the user name/password?
  • As far as I know, Firefox does not support proxies with authentication.

    FoxyProxy.
  • I already paid for VPN, why do I have to pay another service to do the job I want?

If firefox does not support it, any other browser does?

That's not the VPN providers fault. You can always use proxify to use the proxy with any application. Look around and you will find threads which relate to proxify.

  • I am trying to use the socks proxy with php code to get round the issues of web hosts blocking ports. My php code needs to connect to various servers with varying port numbers, but unfortunately pretty much every shared web host forces has a firewall blocking all ports except 80. Their solution, buy a dedicated server.

Thankfully curl in php allows you to specify a socks proxy, the problem is my privateinternetaccess socks proxy is on port 1080, which is a blocked port.

Is there any way you can set this up on port 80 as well?
  • If all you want to do is browse without some sites being ISP-blocked and encrypted browsing is not required, the easiest browser to use the proxy provided here is maxthon.  From the Options menu in the top right, select Proxy/Manage .  It should be obvious what to do from there: Use custom proxy setting/Add and enter proxy-nl.privateinternetaccess.com in the Name box, 109.201.152.1 or any of the working IPs in the Address box, SOCKS5 is the Type to select from the dropdown, 1080 is the port at time of writing.  You'll be pleased to know that I am unaware of your Username and Password.

What makes this browser the easiest is the provision for direct entry of username and password.  This is very insecure, so be careful where you do this.

By the way, isn't it strange how, whatever you're trying to do, there is always one little thing that frustrates in some way?  For me, this time, it was accessing dnsleaktest.com to do one final check on the last system I installed PIA + DNSCrypt on.  Could not resolve the DNS for that site on the last machine, and that site only! Ping it, nslookup from a shell, yes - connect, no.  Worked fine on three other machines on the same network. Can not see anything wrong anywhere and all machines appear to have identical settings but that one site would not work on any browser after flushing caches, purging DNS resolves, weird.
  • cant seam to get the proxy to work with Spotify from www.spotify.com ... all my seting seams to be ok  :((
  • 6 Months later, I'm still thoroughly impressed and absolutely content with the services provided by pia. I'm specifically happy with the netherlands socks5 proxy service. Thanks for all that y'all provide!
  • After I configured Tixati with the proxy, nothing seems to download. Can anyone look into this?
  • Can someone do a brief writeup on configuring Firefox for those of us that don't have experience with Socks5 proxies?  Where and when do you enter the username and password?  I couldn't connect to any website with this configuration (screenshot), but I was never asked for a username and password either.

In answer to theboyk's question, I wanted to use the proxy so only traffic going out of a single browser would have an anonymous IP.  I have other connections from the same computer that can only originate from my static IP.

  • In Firefox, you cannot use a Socks5 proxy with authentication without additional software. Someone mentioned an extension (?), else you'd have to use a local application like Proxifier.
  • FoxyProxy was the noted extension, but I believe you have to use a paid version.  I've been unable to get it working myself, and use chrome extensively.
  • I've had a pretty good experience with a browser called http://www.maxthon.com/ it supports Socks5 proxy natively.

@Jmarket: You do realize that something calling itself a "cloud browser" is not such a good thing to use if one is concerned about privacy, right?
