I am now trying on my regular computer, which is a wired connection to my router. Without PIA, I get my full 200/35, but with PIA connected, it drops down to ~100/35. I expect some loss, but that seems excessive as well. Any thoughts on what I should look for to determine why I am not getting better speeds there?
I have this exact problem.  Without PIA enabled on my wired Ethernet connected PC running Windows 10, I get 110 down/10 up (advertised as 100 down/10 up.)  With PIA on default settings, I get (on average) 45 down/10 up.  Live in US, use Auto connected server or East Coast servers.  I use the slow speed complaint option, especially after a speed test.
  • Any solutions yet? Having same slow internet speed problem when connected to VPN US East

Having the same problem. I'm on macOS on two up-to-date machines—Comcast as ISP. Without PIA I get 300-400 down/40-60 up. When I disable PIA and run a server test to my nearest server (Silicon Valley), I get 250-400 down/40-60 up. As soon as I enable PIA, I get 47 down/2 up. The results are a consistent loss across other servers. Toronto, for example, I get 200 down/39 up on the server test, but when I enable PIA I get 35 down/1 up.

I tried the port/protocol changes, but they didn't fix the problem. My results:

    Without PIA: 393 down/36 up
Without PIA, server test: 396 down/42 up

    udp 1194—47 down/2 up
    udp 1197—46 down/2 up
    udp 1198—43 down/2 up
    udp 8080—49 down/2 up
    udp 9201—38 down/2 up
    udp 53—49 down/2 up
    tcp 80—71 down/36 up
    tcp 110—70 down/36 up
    tcp 443—69 down/34 up

  • @bobclampet ; Hmm, common factor in those results seems to be that the UDP variants are about in the same speed bucket (around 45) while the TCP variants are also grouped together (around 70).

That definitely smells like Comcast is throttling you :/ Seems like a lot of people on Comcast have very varying speeds, something is definitely going on. Hopefully the obfuscation we're working on will help with this.

I hope that obfuscation comes fast - I notice a SIGNIFICANT speed drop between torrents and JDownloader (JD can consistently be at 30MB/s [depending on the host], while torrents will crawl around 5MB/s - and this is on a 1gb up/down line with an RT-AC88U router - PIA installed on Win10, not the router).

  • 750Mbps connection and.... With PIA:

    0Mbps

I can't even download the configuration files when I use PIA. And after checking and double checking it is still 0Mbps ZERO! ZERO! ZERO!

    What is going on?

I get 200-210 Mbps to most regions with PIA on my 200-230 Mbps connection.

Have you tried a different port or protocol? Some ISPs or networks don't play well with UDP.

It's also possible OpenVPN has failed to set up the routing properly and that when connected to the VPN, the encrypted traffic ends up just looping back into the TAP (and thus into itself). To check for that, you'll have to send us a debug log (or check ~/.pia_manager/log/openvpn.log yourself).

    Thanks! I don't understand, though.

Without PIA, tonight I'm getting 338 down/42 up. when i enable the PIA macOS app v77, I'm getting 21 down/2 up, consistent results over changed ports as before. But if I disable PIA's macOS app and try just the Chrome extension v 1.5.0 I'm getting 369 down/25 up.

Is there a way that result doesn't mean it's the PIA macOS app that's the problem?

I'll answer my own question - I'm not happy yet....I'm still seeing the issue (my ISP is Spectrum BTW).

Anyone still having issues with their speed on the East Coast of the US? I have Optimum 200/35 and I get that without PIA, but when I turn on PIA, I get closer to 30/30 (tops) on the New York server. I also tried the East Coast server and it was similar. Debug Info ID 6951 if that is any help at all). I am not sure how to submit a slow speed complaint on the mobile app (Android).
I am connected through SPECTRUM, in South Carolina. I have a 100Mb Down/11 Up service. Connected to PIA using UDP and AUTO for ports. I have MACE=ON, VPN KILL Switch=ON, and DNS LEAK Protect=ON.

I have seen that with ATLANTA, FLORIDA and EAST (USA) servers - Since I signed up a year and a half ago. I was beginning to think that I could never achieve my full ISP speed (No PIA connection) of 100 Megabits. The best I could ever get was about 50-70 on my windows 7 PC, on a good day. Android TV (Alfawise H96 MAX) was struggling at times since it was only getting 20-26 on the same connection, tested using SPEED.NET by Ookla (Android APP).

But lately, After putting in a slow speed complaint about Atlanta server, it has gotten better... but I still see issues of connecting to sites on Terrarium. IF I use it without PIA, I can see More STREAMING servers being listed... but if I connect to PIA, like NYC server... I see less sites during a subsequent search. If I then change to EAST, I get a few less HD TV Servers... and if I sign onto ATLANTA, I get only SD resolution servers.

I have submitted SLOW SPEED complaints but I have never outlined which program I am having issues with. Speed alone does not seem to be the only problem affecting me.

Also, Google seems to not like it when I'm trying to sign in using a different server than my HOME ISP location (No PIA connected).

PS- After reading recent posts, I disconnected PIA and switched to connecting with TCP instead lf UDP and it did seem to increase my Torrent Speeds. Am I missing something at my end that could be the reason for slow transfer speeds?
  • animal999 As far as our service is concerned, TCP and UDP will offer the same level of security and encryption.

As far as the protocol is concerned, UDP can be a faster protocol. If a UDP packet is dropped, and improperly transmitted, the intended receiver of the packet can ask for the missing packet to be re-sent where if that same thing happened in TCP, it would have to re-send the whole packet stream from start to finish so all packets arrive in order.

TCP could be considered like a train full of cargo, All of the train cars have to arrive at the destination at the same time, in the same order, where UDP could be considered like a convoy of transport trucks it doesn't matter what order the trucks arrive at the destination, in the end, everything is where it needs to be.

Because of its technologically based faster speeds, many ISP's will often speed limit UDP communication. I just wanted to provide this to see if it help

Let us help you with the speed you see while using PIA with your ISP Spectrum.  If you can please open a support ticket with us at: https://www.privateinternetaccess.com/helpdesk/new-ticket we will be glad to help you out further. Please use ATTN; SMR.
