All squares after 17.10 update

Hello.

After upgrading to 17.10 I can't see a thing on the PIA Applet since all it's characters are showing as squares. I can still click it and guess where I'm connecting, but I not always get the servers right. Anyone got a fix??

I'm trying your solution, will report back in a few minutes. I forgot to add that I'm using Lubuntu and i3wm. Hence, no use to the solution involving setting XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP forcibly to Unity (Answer in another thread).

Solution works fine on Lubuntu 17.10.
