How does printer work inside VPN tunnel

Where does the VPN tunnel begin?  I can print wirelessly.  Airplay also works.  I can also log in to my wife's iMac and my Time Capsule. I am not sure where the tunnel begins and the side connections are not allowed.

    It depends on where the app is running. If you have the app on your local machine the tunnel begins right at the addapter (more or less). However, if you look at your route table you will see that local routes (within your own network) do not flow through the tunnel. They stay within your own network. So that is how you can print and chat with your wife's computer.

    I am using PIA VPN service.  Not a VPN router.  Is there some way I can look at the route table?

    Open Network Utility.

    Click "Netstat" tab

    Select "Display routing table information"
