New vpn user. I can't connect to PIA.

I purchased the year subscription, downloaded the install file linked in one of the confirming emails un-arched it and ran it. It locked up my desktop and I had to reset xwindow to unfreeze it. On coming up it showed the new icon in my panel. I clicked the Icon and selected auto-connect from the menu. I got a notice it was connecting. After about 30 seconds I got a notice that it was disconnected. It never went to connected status. I've re-entered the username and password from the confirmation email several times in setting even copy pasted them from the email. No joy. I've tried re-installing from the shell script with the same result. My network is otherwise working normally.

  • I found the pia_nw.log and it says the client daemon was trying to connect to 127.0.0.1 on port 31742. That is of course the loopback IP. Why did it do that?
  • Next day.
After bootup, the PIA icon turns green indicating I am connected to vpn but when I open Firefox and go to the PIA home page they show my actual IP address and say I'm not protected. Is there something else I need to do to get Firefox connected through vpn?
  • Bizzaar.
After re-typing my password both at the webpage and the app 'settings' for the umptuith time, it's working.
  • glad we could help?

That's because the app is actually to components that talk to eachother over localhost. One component handles the VPN connection in the background while the other handles the GUI/menu portion of it. They exchange messages to update the icon color, set which server you selected, etc.

Nope, should pretty much just work after connecting.

If you still have issues, can you send me the debug logs from the app so I can look more deeply into what's going on?
  • I cannot connect as well after paying $100.  Both the VPN and Sock5 proxy do not work for me.  I'm trying to get a refund but no one is responding.

Curious, why did you pull up a thread that is almost 2 years old? You should start a new thread.

    Try this https://www.privateinternetaccess.com/helpdesk/kb/articles/how-do-i-request-a-refund

  • 1. Check your connection
    2. Connect to a different server location
    3. Flush your DNS
    4. Change proxy settings
    5. Change the port being used by the VPN
    6. Check your VPN protocol
    7. Check DNS settings
  • Thanks, nice troubleshooting list.
