Openvpn incredibly slow on Asus routers
I bought an Asus rt-ac66u router, upgraded it to Merlin and configured openvpn with my PIA login. I never got more than 12 Mbs download in spite of any number of combinations of settings. My non-vpn download speed is about 235Mbs. I've used the suggestions for speeding up the router in the helpdesk (drop the MTU, make sure to use udp 1198 or tcp 502), and followed other people's advice on various custom configurations, and disabling compression, but none of these things had any impact one way or the other. One guy concluded that it had to do with turning off the adaptive QoS, but that was never enabled on my router in the first place.
I eventually concluded that the cpu just wasn't strong enough, seeing as the cpu maxed out every time I used speedtest.
So I replaced the ac66u with an ac1900p because it had over three times the processing power. It was certainly better than the ac66u, giving me up to 40Mbs, but the moment I started using policy rules for directing traffic in order to allow Roku and Netflix, the connection dropped down to 5-10Mbs again. This in spite of the fact that neither of the cores hit more than 35%, so the cpu definitely can't be blamed this time.
What am I missing here?
