"Network Change Detected"

Whenever I use PIA on my Debian Jessie machine it works for about 15 minutes then Chrome stops working (page usually freezes), then after pressing refresh, comes up saying "network change detected" (or words to that effect, I can't remember exactly). Basically internet is gone.

I have to close Chrome, turn off PIA then internet is back.

Preliminary googling has revealed other people talking about similar problems (although I've noticed they all seem to be on Windows), and the common thread seems to be that DNS settings are changing.

What could the matter be?? How can I fix this?

    i've found it better to bring up the VPN before starting a browser. basically, establish the network configuration you're going to use first, then fire up the programs which will use it
