MX linux 17 - pia install incomplete

I have just installed MX Linux 17 64bit and have tried installing both PIA 75 and 74.

both run as far as saying everything installed but then fail to run the GUI for me to enermy username and password.

suggestions please - never had this problem befor on either MX 16.1 or Mint

"for me to enermy" .. i think that's "for me to enter my", yes?  possible you're missing some important dependencies (software packages) ?

Just reinstalled MX 17 - updated system

ran PIA

"/home/username/.pia_manager/pia_manager/run.sh" in terminal

resulting message " pia_nw: no process found"

help please

MX 17 is Debian Stretch, as is Mint 18.3 I believe

Alternatively to @martouf's link, we also have a NetworkManager script that's probably easier to use and install than going full on manual OpenVPN: https://www.privateinternetaccess.com/pages/client-support/ubuntu-openvpn

NetworkManager is certainly wonderful to use when it behaves but going full on manual is useful to make sure the foundation is solid when there's trouble
