WIRED router with speeds of at least 50mbps with PIA

I am looking for a wired only router that I can set up PIA on that will get me 50+mbps.  I already have a wireless setup so I just need this to act as the vpn.  I pay for 200mbps and my current setup but with vpn enabled I get around 10mbps and it seems like a waste of my money.  Thanks.

  • Hi @p1723,

Sorry to hear this. Could you please create a ticket so we can go through some testing with you in order to identify the cause.
Could you also please include who your ISP is, your region and which server you're connecting to as this will help us identify issues.

  • Im fairly certain the issue is the router doesn't have enough power and I need a better router.

I'm afraid if you want VPN speeds of 50+ you're gonna have to shell out a good $300 - $500 for a real router. I'll recommend a few of my favorite solutions that completely blow away any consumer grade routers like Asus, Linksys, Netgear, etc... and if you are willing to go this route that I recommend, then I will help guide you through the setup process.

The route that I recommend is to switch to a pfSense based router. This is pretty much the only way you will be able to get awesome VPN speeds for every device connected to it.

The Protectli hardware is fantastic! I strongly recommend the FW4 as it can easily handle 50+ mbps. Any model above that will help push 100+ mbps. Do not get one that does not have AES-NI. AES-NI is important for accelerating OpenVPN speeds and increasing CPU efficiency. Also, future version of pfSense will require you to have an AES-NI enabled processor or else pfSense will not work.

The C2558 at Mitxpc is a powerhouse that will easily push 150+mbps with AES-128-CBC. Like I said, they come at a price... but the price goes to pure performance unlike consumer grade routers that pack a bunch of features you'll never use. I myself have the Supermicro C2558 rackmount and it is very nice (the power-supply fan can get annoying after a while). It set me back about $480.
  • Ill have to consider it.  I was trying not to spend a ton.  Is the speed any better if I use IPSEC?  When I use the PIA app on my phone it looks to be using IPSec and the speed is fine

If you are using the official PIA on mobile, you should be using AES. I personally wouldn't use IPSEC as it is not encrypted. It really only just changes your IP address. Your data passing through can still be sniffed.
  • Ive discovered another problem that may prevent me from doing it all.  I have streaming TV service and it looks like they geo block vpns.  So a whole bunch of channels just don't work at all no matter what VPN I try. Any suggestions on that?

You'll have to find out the IP's the TV streaming service uses and shuttle those to bypass the VPN.
  • You will struggle to get more than 10 - 20Mbps with the VPN running on the home router as the CPU as never designed to do Encryption / Decryption like that.

You can either shell out for an expensive router or just use your PC and bridge the connection into a switch or something.
