Connect WRT1900ACS Router w/DD-WRT and PIA to TP-Link Archer400 VDSL modem/router

Hello,

I'm attempting to set up a Linksys WRT1900ACS with DD-WRT and OpenVPN configured with PIA to pass through a TP-Link Archer400 modem/router.

I've got PIA installed on the Linksys and get a "Connection Success" message, the Linksys WAN port is connected to a LAN port on the TP-Link (it is connected to VDSL). The IP address on the Linksys is static, a static entry was added to the TP-Link.

The problem is I'm not getting internet when wifi connected to the Linksys. I'm sure this is just a simple setting I need to change on one of the routers. Maybe it's a subnet problem, I'm not sure I have it configured properly. The TP-Link has always used the 10.0.0.1-254 IP address range with 1-40 available to DHCP. What would be the best ranger to set to the Linksys?

I'm not an IT rookie (although my networking knowledge limited, I was an MCSE back in the day) so feel free to be highly technical if needed. I'd probably stumble on to a fix eventually, but y'all here could save me that time and frustration.

Thanks in advance for any help you can give!

  • This setup looks fine to me. Have you tried disabling the VPN on your Linksys to see if it gets internet access without it?

Given the symptoms, I'm tempted to say the VPN might not be working properly and that would be why there is no Internet access.

You also say when connected to WiFi, does that mean that you have Internet connectivity when wired or just that you're only using WiFi?

Essentially, as long as the Linksys can get Internet access (without the VPN), the TP-Link side of things becomes entirely irrelevant.

  • Hi Max-P,

    Thanks for the response.

Wired or wireless I'm not getting internet when connected to the Linksys with PIA configured. I'll try disabling the standard VPN on the Linksys, I assume you mean IPSec? I haven't found that setting yet, I'm still looking at all the new settings in the dd-wrt firmware.

I'm thinking about setting a DMZ on the TP-Link for the Linksys/dd-wrt/PIA port. I read another post that said it fixed the problem.

Any other thoughts or ideas would be greatly appreciated.
  • I seriously doubt setting it as DMZ will help for anything. PIA doesn't need any passthrough to work.

Have you made sure to follow our DD-WRT guide to set it up? Turning PIA off should be a simple matter of turning the OpenVPN Client setting back to "disabled".
  • I need to check the "pass through authentication" setting. I didn't see that mentioned in the instructions at:

    https://www.privateinternetaccess.com/pages/client-support/dd-wrt-openvpn#regional_gateways

If you've got a better tutorial let me know. Thanks again.
