PIA Client Random Disconnects w/ Password Error

Recently, my PIA Client has been randomly disconnecting, stating that the Username & Password are incorrect (or failed). Upon reconnecting, everything is fine. Is this a client side issue or server side? This has only been the last week or so, but it's very very irritating due to the fact that it's happening on a machine that runs 24/7. I understand planned downtime and client updates, but random disconnects due to account errors that don't actually exist is pretty frustrating.

  • Also, to note (forgot to mention this), the Client does not resolve this itself by attempting to reconnect after a timer...it simply disconnects and remains idle with no resolution until it's manually reconnected. 
  • Are you using the PIA application or directly using OpenVPN?

    There is an issue with some AUTH_FAILURE happening for some users mostly with newer versions of OpenVPN (some 2.3 and mainly 2.4), bur the application uses OpenVPN version 2.2.x which shouldn't suffer from this bug.


    Also, how long has this been an issue? We did some maintenance on our website yesterday which includes the authentication API the servers use to authenticate VPN connections, which could explain why you couldn't reconnect yesterday specifically.
