Uninstalled PIA app w/CleanMyMac on all, restart, try reinstall and continuing to receive Ruby error on all devices. How is it whenever I pay for a service vs. hack/crack/steal it ...the ones I pay for seem to give me the most grief lol!
First of all, uninstalling with CleanMyApp and similar things like AppZapper isn't really the best way to go. While they often locate and delete associated files that would be left behind if you just dragged an application to the Trash, they can leave a lot behind anyway. The best way to delete an app is to use something like EasyFind to search your drive for related files and folders and manually delete them. It can be laborious but it's the most reliable way. But in this case if you just follow the instructions on this site for uninstalling PIA, including the Terminal command for deleting a specific hidden folder, you'll be good.
And then don't try to reinstall version 76. Download and install version 75.
Sorry guys, I don't think we'll have a v77 ready tonight. We have identified the bug but we're doing a full test cycle on every macOS releases we support as well as the full range of Mac hardware we have to ensure that the fix actually does work properly on all machines and doesn't just move the requirement back a few versions.
Still keeping this thread updated as much as possible.
Also, PIA should disable the v.75 app's "auto-update available" notice that pops up, as I have seen on my home MacBook Pro. People will try to update it, even though there is nothing to download/update new, confusing end users who have no idea what's going on here.
I've joined "the club." Very frustrating since PIA has still not fixed this problem.
We're on it, please be patient So far we're suspecting the latest version of the app was compiled with compiler flags that ended up using the AVX instruction set, which only exists on fairly new Intel CPUs on Macs. So far only Macs from 2012 or older seems affected by this.
I'm keeping this thread updated for every new development we have. So far we're testing different builds internally, once we're confident we have a working fix we might either post it here for additional testing or release it as v77 depending on the confidence level.
Another data point: MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2010) 10.12.6
2013 MacPro 3.5 GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon E5 MacOS 10.13.3 Same issue, Ruby quits unexpectedly And macs older than 2012 are NOT the only ones affected by this.
Thanks again everyone for the feedback and patience!
Good news for today, we are now confident what the issue is and we have an internal test build that seems to work fine on all of our machines we managed to reproduce the issue on. I'm expecting to see a fixed v77 coming out relatively soon!
We have a beta build we'd like to test, but I'm unfortunately not allowed to link it publicly to avoid it spreading too much.
Anyone interested in trying out the fixed v76 build please PM me for the download link. Thanks
For the others, don't worry v77 should be coming soon after we have the necessary feedback! This is a very minor maintenance release for Mac so you guys are not missing out on much
Not sure why, but after restarting my Mac, the ruby inside the Private Internet Access.app crashes. Cannot find Private Internet Access.app in Startup items, but maybe there's another related app that initiates Private Internet Access.app? And for me, on El Capitan, I still cannot install v75 yet, also crashing the ruby trying to do so. Waiting for the fixed v77.
I thought the "next" version of PIA was supposed to *remove* Ruby???! What the heck is happening iwth that? Ruby has been the BIGGEST pain for the last several years.

It's still planned as far as I know, but we also have to maintain the current application as it would be crazy to just abandon the current one and be several more months without any release. I don't know the status of the new one as nothing fell to QA for me to see yet, but I do know that v76 (well, v77 now) was a very much due release. It's ironically very underwhelming for Mac, but it brought a real installer and signed binaries for Windows, as well as quite a lot of important fixes for Linux.
But yeah, Ruby definitely as a pain. This whole thread is the proof of it :P
I still had my original PIA v 75 installer, I just deleted the v76 app and reinstalled v75 and it worked. Also retained my username and password. I am back on PIA on v75
There's a half hour of my life I won't get back.....v76 install f'd up like everyone else here (Mac Mini 2012 i7 quad running OS X 10.11.6) - but it must have installed enough of itself to eff up my v74 install since that didn't work either. Had to dig up my v74 installer, but that wouldn't work either - had to do the total uninstall (with terminal command) then restart, the reinstall v74 and I'm finally back up and running. How about we get the new v77 installer out there huh?

Well good to know that it is still in the works, but it would certainly be helpful if the devs could accelerate the process.

Mac mini (Mid 2011) Macmini5,2
Intel Core i7 2.7 GHz + 16 GB RAM
running Mac OS X 10.11.6
Tried the deleting method, but still get same error of 'disk image broken', and cannot install v.75.
Obviously v.76 also does not install, ruby crashing after installer launch when entering permission.
And then don't try to reinstall version 76. Download and install version 75.

MacBook Pro (15-inch, Early 2011)
MacBook Pro 13 inch, Mid-2010

Dragged v76 to the trash, restarted. Downloaded v75, installed, runs fine.
my mac pro has upgraded ram, video, drives, usb 3 and its a good little 8 core machine.. but this thread is making me realize how old it is.
I may have to spring for a new mac pro whenever they finally get released. I better start saving.

Indeed it seems as though the AVX instruction set is not supported by my CPU.
Thanks for the help Max-P!
Let me know if you'd like me to test the new build
