  • Unfortunately routers typically run into a bottleneck due to the speed of the device's processor itself.

Someone posted this in another thread on this forum, the article itself is a bit old but its research on the throughput is pretty interesting: http://www.instructables.com/id/Configure-VPN-Settings-on-a-DD-WRT-Router-for-Priv/

Their results were a bit higher than yours without overclock however:
CPU Clock (Mhz) = 1000 MHz (stock)
Avg Download Speed (Mbps) = 37.10
    Avg Load CPU Temp (C) = 67.10

CPU Clock (Mhz) = 1200 MHz
Avg Download Speed (Mbps) = 38.63
    Avg Load CPU Temp (C) = 66.9

CPU Clock (Mhz) = 1400 MHz
Avg Download Speed (Mbps) = 42.90
    Avg Load CPU Temp (C) = 67.30

For some people adding these to the additional settings section of the OpenVPN client helps, but your mileage may vary:

    fast-io
    sndbuf 524288
    rcvbuf 524288
