Asus a68u router set up Fail!!!

I have looked through the forums but have not found my specific issue, the tech support I received after opening a ticket did not make sense to me. I am new to the vpn thing although this is my second company with paid subscription. I came from pure vpn.

I went to set up my router configuration in hopes that I wouldn't have to figure each device separately and here is what happened.I followed this guide.

I should also mention I am running the latest and greatest asus firmware,300438420308

 https://helpdesk.privateinternetaccess.com/hc/en-us/articles/115005754103-Setting-up-a-Router-running-AsusWRT-Firmware

Per the guide everything seemed to be working, I would get the blue check mark indication it was correct, and so I added a few different locations.
The first 2 locations dropped my internet completely. I then attempted to change location again to one that would work and my router locked up...I could go to any tab and make adjustments except the vpn tab,if I did that the router would lock up and hang.I tried many things including rebooting, cycling power but no change, if I so much as looked at eh vpn tab it would hang, and it would not show me its current info. I eneded up having to do a factory reset on the router and I'm a bit gunshy to try again... Any ideas on why this happened would be helpful, or perhaps a different set up set of instructions.

Thanks

  • Sometimes when I get in a situation like this I do exactly what you did. Restart. However, instead of attacking the problem with brute force, I instead will write down the configuration that I am doing. I look at the page and the fields that need to be filled in. Then I write the field name and the answer. Does that answer look remotely like the example given? If yes, then I go with that, but will put a (?) next to it as a means of going back to that answer if there are issues.

I looked at the link you provided and it reminded me of my attempt to load VPN Client on my Linksys router. Too many questions I had but eventually found the answer by just looking around. It does not seem too difficult of a task but can be intimidating at the very least.

Keep working with it. You will find the solution. It is there. Just have to narrow it down. Again, to me, the key is does your answer look similar to the example given?
  • Which config files did you use? I have the AC68U as my home router, so I know this model with the latest ASUS firmware is capable of connecting to PIA — I usually get ~35mbps.

This is a bit of a flyer, but it might help to change to PIA DNS. You can access this setting under the WAN tab. DNS server 1 should be set to 209.222.18.222, and DNS server 2 should be 209.222.18.218.
