[Solved] Chrome "Establishing secure connection"

edited February 2018 in General VPN Support
I have an issue with the Chrome extension since Yesterday. It reads: "Establishing secure connection" at the bottom and then I get the PIA icon with the error:

Connection error

net::ERR_PROXY_CONNECTION_FAILED

- When I turn the extension on and connect, it reads that I'm connected and the icon is green, like it does when it used to work.
- When I turn the extension off, Chrome works like normal.
- When I turn the extension off, the PIA desktop app on, Chrome works normal and the IP is masked like it should.
- I have attempted rebooting my router while the computer was turned off and I have uninstalled/installed the extension.
- My Windows is updated, as well as my drivers. And I have cleared browsing data in Chrome.

Can you help me?

  • Hmm, that is strange.

    Can you access PIA's website without the extension or app running? What region are you connecting to with the extension?

    Can you try connecting both the desktop app and the extension at the same time and see if that works?

    The extension only really sets up an HTTPS proxy in Chrome, so there are very few reasons why it couldn't connect: either the servers are unreachable for some reason, or PIA's DNS names are not resolving properly on your computer. Both options tend to point to ISP restrictions as other browsing works, and on the network level using the extension is identical to using PIA's website. Connecting the desktop app then the extension will easily test that theory as the extension should obviously work fine on PIA's own network!

    Yes I can access PIA's website without the extension or app running, as well as any other website. I have attempted connecting to every region with the extension.

    I have tried connecting both the desktop app and the extension at the same time and that works, on PIA's website as well as any other website.

    I have also uninstalled/installed chrome completely, but it's the same result.
  • i have this same issue. Worked fine 2 days ago. Now

    Connection error

    net::ERR_PROXY_CONNECTION_FAILED

    You might have lost connectivity to the internet, your connection might have been temporarily interrupted, or the Private Internet Access server you are connecting to might have connectivity issues.

    please help!
  • Same problem here. Worked fine a couple of days ago.
    Connection error net::ERR_PROXY_CONNECTION_FAILED
  • Ok, so according to this result @i3928 it does indeed look like your ISP is blocking PIA specifically in some way. If there was an issue with the extension itself, it would also fail while connected with the PIA desktop app. Similarly, if it was a server issue, it would also not working while connected to the PIA desktop app. For it to not work only when you are using the extension with your ISP,  something strange is definitely going on. Are you aware of any filtering done by your ISP?

    What ISP are you all using? @aosidjasidjasd89787 and @marinatedspecimen

  • I'm having the same problem, and was directed to post here so that the issues are all in one thread. I actually can't answer the ISP question though, as the computer is a work-network one and we recently changed to a new ISP and I can't remember which one we moved to. When I'm in work on friday I'll find out.

    However we changed ISP a few weeks ago, and the extension was working last friday, and wasn't working on monday this week. Though I suppose the ISP may have updated and -started- blocking PIA as of this week. I wasn't aware of ISPs in the UK blocking VPN's though... I thought the whole point of the VPN was to circumvent ISP blocks and censorship aha

    I think it must have something to do with Chrome itself, since I doubt we all have the same ISP. But I'm novice at understanding computers. My ISP is Telfort, a Dutch company. I've checked with them and according to them they're not even allowed to block a VPN by law. There are also no reports of any VPN blockades on their forum. So I don't think the problem lies with my ISP.

    The fact this happened to all of us on Monday is just too much of a coincidence. I doubt all our ISP or conspiring together to block this VPN at the same moment. I love conspiracies but that's too much a stretch you know. So I think it's logical it has to do with an update with Windows (I have Win10 x64) or Chrome. However, I manually checked for updates hours before it started happened, which was between 12:00 and 15:00 GMT on Monday if I'm not mistaken.

    I had the same problem on my PC at work, but a quick Google search led me to try this:

    1) Left click on the PIA extension icon in my Chrome browser.
    2) Select "Extension settings"
    3) In the tracking section, disable "PIA MACE".

    I am now able to access any web site with the PIA extension running in Chrome.  Yes, I lose a little security by disabling PACE but at least it works.  As to what changed on Monday it may have been an automatic Chrome update.

    Thank you!!!

    It is working again! I love you!
  • This also fixed my issue. Strange thing to have started causing a problem, but at least it now works!
  • Update 20190813: Work great on me by turning off MACE. Tested on Microsoft Edge DEV.
