Router VPN Issues

I am trying to set up VPN on my network. I live in Mexico and have a router from Telnor that brings service in (Arcadyan) that then goes to my Google Wifi device. I'd like to install my Asus RT-AC68U in between them with VPN installed. I have configured the Asus according to https://www.privateinternetaccess.com/forum/discussion/4306/configuring-the-router-asus-rt-ac68u but when I insert between the Arcadyan router and my Google Wifi device, I lose internet. Clearly I am doing something wrong but not sure how to troubleshoot.

Thanks in advance for any guidance.

  • Since your Google WiFi device was connected directly to your Arcadyan Router, the Google device may have a static IP address. Check to see that your Asus IP, Arcadyan IP and Google device IP addresses are all on the same network, or, there are routes setup correctly.
  • They all have a 192.168.86.xx IP. Is that what you mean?
  • It should work. Might need to reboot all the devices so they acknowledge the change of IP range (I don't know Google WiFi specifically but I assume it gets its IP via DHCP and just bridges to the rest of the network).

The first step into debugging this would be to first take the WiFi out of the equation. Connect your Asus router to your Arcadyan router/modem, and connect your computer directly to the Asus router. Configure everything as you need and make sure the computer connected to the Asus has Internet access and that PIA works as desired.

Once this is done, you know for fact that the Asus router is working fine. Only then connect the Google WiFi router to the Asus, and also make sure to unplug the Google WiFi device from power for a good minute or two to make sure all devices that were connected to it time out and disconnect from it. Then you can plug it back into power and let it detect the new network, and if our assumptions are right, all devices on your network will also start using the Asus router.

If it still doesn't work, you may want to try to reset the Google WiFi device entirely and set it back up fresh: it's also possible it remembers its home network and still tries to talk to the Arcadyan despite being plugged into the Asus.

Also, make sure that the daisy chain cabling is correct. Output of the Google device (world icon?) goes into an input of the Asus (LAN 1-4). Then the output of the Asus router (blue connector) goes to the Ethernet 1-4 on the Arcadyan Router. I am sure you already have done this or know to do this. Just making sure the connections are good.

  • Thank you both for your help. I've successfully done those steps and the Asus is now working between the Aracadyan router and the Google Wifi however the VPN does not seem to be working. Also now when I try to log into the Asus at the IP address, I am getting this:
Settings have been updated. Web page will now refresh.
Changes have been made to the IP address or port number. You will now be disconnected from RT-AC68U.
To access the settings of RT-AC68U, reconnect to the wireless network and use the updated IP address and port number.

I looked on the network and I am using the correct IP that the Asus is on.  Thoughts?

ok scratch that. I am able to log in. When I go to the VPN Client tab on the Asus router, I can see the connection status is a blue checkmark so the PIA settings are correcft and its supposedly working. Is there a way I can test to ensure the VPN is indeed working?
  • its also painfully slow to load pages.  :-(
  • You can go to IPLeak.net and check the public IP address. It should NOT be you ISP Public IP address. Also while you are there, check your DNS address. In theory it should be the same as you Public IP address, NOT your ISP DNS address.

Not sure about the slowness of the pages.
  • I would use this guide - www.techradar.com/how-to/how-to-install-a-vpn-on-your-router

Or this one, which I found easier to understand - https://www.vpnmentor.com/blog/how-to-install-vpn-on-a-router/
  • I had it successfully set up but it was incredibly slow. I have since disconnected it unless someone knows how to improve the speed issues.  Where I live, the internet is very slow (6MBPS) and with that VPN plugged in, it dropped to less than 1MBPS, so that will not work for me.
