Slow speeds through dd-wrt OpenVPN

I've read multiple forums./threads online and here's my situation. I have a R7000 Router with DD-WRT v3.0-r34800M kongac (02/07/18). I've followed PIA's setup guide and tweaked as many settings as I could. When connected to my closest PIA server I typically see speeds around  20-30 Mbps.. When I disconnect from the PIA server I see around 80 - 100Mbps. Is there anything else I can do to improve speeds while connected to PIA?

  • Unfortunately that seems to be about what you can expect to get on that router. Other people seems to have similar speeds to you: https://www.privateinternetaccess.com/forum/discussion/23337/i-thought-a-r7000-could-get-50mbits

This usually boils down to be just a limitation of the processing power of those devices. Embed devices like routers rely a lot on hardware accelerated routing and NAT, and throwing a VPN in front of it makes it have to do a lot in software which loads up the CPU and memory.

If you need better speeds I would highly recommend setting up PIA directly on the bandwidth-hungry device so they can take advantage of their full speed, and leave other devices protected by the router itself.

    I hope this helps!
