VPN vs Proxy

When using Deluge, if I connect to a region I only get about 2MB download speeds. If I connect through a proxy to "proxy-nl.privateinternetaccess.com", I get 6MB+. If I use both the VPN and Proxy together I still only get a max of 2MB.

So, my question is, is it safe to only connect through the PIA proxy and not use the VPN?

  • From what I understand using a proxy only masks your ip, so that people who aren’t paying attention won’t see what your doing. ISP for example. With a vpn it masks it and encrypts it making it harder for people who are actively trying to see what your doing to do so. But I would like further clarification as well.
  • From what I understand, is that when using SOCKS5 I will tunnel to PIA and PIA will make the request, so when it gets to its destination, the IP address will be a PIA IP, and not mine. Without encryption, no-one on the other end will know it is me. I will not be sending/receiving sensitive information, so is encryption really needed?

The only one I really seem to need to worry about is my ISP when doing it this way.
