Android App supported Chromebooks (ChromeOS)

I'm just wondering if anyone at PIA is working on making the app compatible with ChromeOS?

I'm using OpenVPN now but I tried the Android App a few times. It installs straight from the Play Store, opens and all the settings are accessible. When turning it on it claims it is connected, it gives me a PIA IP but when I run any checks it only shows my ISP IP and the data in and out stops at a few k. Also worth noting is that the app crashes if I try to resize it.

I notice that none of the companies offering VPN Software support ChromeOS so I assume it's either not worth your time to make it compatible or there's some sort of restriction within ChromeOS that means it can't work?

ChromeOS Version 63.0.3239.140 (Official Build) (64-bit)

  • As far as I know, the Android world can't really talk to the ChromeOS world so that would be why it doesn't work. The PIA Android app uses the Android VPN API, so if it doesn't work it's not a lack of support for ChromeOS but rather ChromeOS not doing anything with it/only applying it to the sandbox for that particular app.

If it haven't changed since last time I checked, Android apps are run as Chrome extensions/apps. It's not a full Android OS, just the runtime.

I think the only way at the moment to run a VPN system-wide on ChromeOS is to either jailbreak/root and do it from the Linux side, or to run the OpenVPN profiles as you did on your other thread :)

I might try to make an updated set of ONC profiles to use the newer profiles if I can get ChromeOS running here.
  • @JollyRoger I've built an experimental ONC file for use with ChromeOS. Unfortunately, it refuses to import on my VM (probably a broken dev build), but neither does the one I based it on.

Can you try importing this one and see if you can connect with it? (Note: contains ALL PIA regions): https://d.max-p.me/pia/forum/30318/PIA-Standard-CrOS.onc

@Max-P That works for me, imports with no issues and I'm using it now. Thank you. It's great to have an up to date list.

That should be available to download from the main website.

While I have your attention Max can I query IPV6. From what I understand it should be blocked your end but as you've seen from my other post I have to block it on my router. Why is this?

Awesome! This is scripted so I'll build a whole bunch of different configs to match the different options we have.

    Working on it ;)

It's a bit more complicated than that. PIA currently doesn't support IPv6 at all at the moment due to privacy concerns and the still relatively low adoption of the protocol. So PIA doesn't really block IPv6, it doesn't support it so obviously if you try to send IPv6 to PIA it goes nowhere.

The reason you need to block IPv6 at the router level is that since the router knows the tunnel is only capable of IPv4, it will route the IPv4 into the tunnel and continue routing IPv6 through your ISP normally, resulting in "leaking" IPv6.
  • Thank you for that explanation. No offence to the people who offer support via the main site/email that I've dealt with but you've given me the help and answers that I've been after since joining at the end of January.

Thank you again for taking the time to sort the new ONC and replying to me.
