Are software updates automatic?

The announcements for the new Port Forwarding and Desktop Client application have me confused.  Are these updated automatically or should we uninstall PIA and reinstall the latest version?

  • No response great.  I guess that PIA software does not update and you need to follow the forum and reinstall manually.  Or you  will be running out of date PIA software.

No unfortunately the software does not update automatically.  All software requires manual updates. They release a new update about every 3 to 4 months. * You can join the new beta program to get access to pre-release software models of the desktop and mobile versions. (However, as of right now with the release of v77 there is no beta currently available but you will get an email when a new pre-release is available.)

I check the forum everyday but somehow I overlooked your post sorry about that.
  • @NLrunner, sorry for the delay on our end.

We don't do automatic updates because we consider them a security risk. We believe that you should be able to vet all software that you have on your system, and automatic updates wouldn't be in keeping with that philosophy. We do send out notifications for important security updates — usually, our updates are just bugfixes that shouldn't fundamentally change how your VPN is implemented. I believe the last critical security update was over a year ago.

I've heard some talk that we may begin sending out update notifications for every release, but I'm not sure if this is the route the devs have decided to take going forward.
  • Thanks for the replies.  I skimmed the comments on recent releases and it's way over my head.  You mention these updates aren't security related so I won't worry about it.  I updated the Client and it works.

Does PIA have an "About" button somewhere, so we can tell what version we have installed?  Seriously... it doesn't auto update itself?

In the bottom left hand corner of the settings menu, you'll see the application version number.
  • I use the Firefox add-on Wachete to notify me when the PIA client software page changes.
