The popups on the PIA desktop app to upgrade are TOO FREQUENT!

I am quite happy sticking with version 72 on my windows 10 machine. Even if i disable the "show desktop notifications" option in the application itself, it wont tell me that i am connected, but it will still constantly like every 15minutes popup saying upgrade to the latest version, something im just not comfortable doing right now because of all the bug reports. Besides, if a user has already seen the popup to upgrade and decides against it, why badger him like this? It never used to happen in the previous version upgrades.
Max-P and Support, is there a way you can talk to the dev team, to tell them to take it down a notch the alerts to upgrade? Once a month will be fine, not once every 15 to 20minutes.

  • That's very ironic because... that issue is fixed since v76. It has a "Don't show this again" button added to the notification so you can ignore that upgrade until the next one.

I think disabling notifications on v72 should stop the popups too. Have you tried restarting the client? I think the option is only checked when the update timer is enabled, so restarting it with notifications off might help with this.
  • I'm on v.72 (Mac) and there is no button to dismiss the alert, only the close button which only closes the current popup. Out of curiosity I restarted the client with notifications turned off and I still get the upgrade nag every 10-15 min. This really sucks... Just tell me what to block or which file to delete so it stops. Thanks.
  • Hi Max-P, yes i have tried restarting and disabling the notifications option, no joy. Like nobodyspecial said, is there a way to disable the popup from your end for version 72, or my end on a Windows 10 machine?
  • @nobodyspecial @nica95 Sorry for the delays. I had to change some code around to get this working for you guys. The app just sees there's a new version when it updates its region list so we can't disable it from our end. The app doesn't tell the API your username when it fetches the region list.

Here's how to completely disable upgrade notifications on v72:
    1. Exit the app completely
    2. Download this modified file: https://d.max-p.me/pia/forum/30577/upgradehelper.js
    3. Copy the upgradehelper.js file to C:\Program Files\pia_manager\pia_tray_files\js
    4. Agree to replace the file and to use administrator privileges
    5. Start the app back up. Update notifications should be gone.
Please note that we don't recommend doing so as it means you will never be notified to update, which could compromise your security if an issue with v72 were to be discovered as we won't have a way to notify you about it. Use this modification at your own risk.
  • Thanks @Max-P, I just tried it and waiting to see what happens. Honestly, even if it doesn't work, I'm so impressed with the fact that you would do this for us that I'll just update. I don't think I've ever felt like a company cared before now. You are AWESOME! Many thanks!
  • Just wanted to report that I've not seen any popups, your fix seems to have worked. Thanks again!

I would have been surprised if it didn't! This is the file that handles the update notifications, and I've replaced it with one that does literally nothing :P

    You're welcome :)
  • Beautiful hack Max-P, it works! havent seen the popups since applying it and restarting the app. You sir are a real asset of PIA, and the forum is enriched by your presence. Many thanks.
