VPN setup on ASUS RT-AC68W, stopped working on some devices recently

I have been using the Merlin 380.69 firmware for a few years without issue, a few weeks ago my Firesticks started dropping signal and my Android phone connects but says "Internet may not be available".  I upgraded my Merlin Software to 384.3_Beta in hopes it would fix it.  It didn't.  Wierd thing is that my Windows 10 Laptop connects fine to the VPN wifi and when I check PIA website it shows protected.  Any idea why this would have started happening?

  • @crm1975, this sounds very strange!

Does the issue still happen when you deactivate the VPN connection on your router? What do you have configured for DNS?

On your Android phone, are you still able to browse the internet despite the "Internet may not be available" notification?
  • When i deactivate the Firewall everything seems to work  fine.  I cannot browse the internet when I get the error on my Android phone.   I have "Connect to DNS automatically" set to Yes, In the DNS and Wins Server Setting section, my DNS Server 1 and 2 are both blank.

I have 2 Wifi routers.  My setup is that I have a Spectrum coming into Netgear C3000 modem/Router (Signal 1) and out of there it goes into my ASUS RT-AC68W router (Signal 2).  On the Netgear, I get both my IP Address and DNS from automatically from ISP.

Well, I got mine working again by following the settings in this post.  https://www.snbforums.com/threads/how-to-setup-a-vpn-client-including-policy-rules-for-pia-and-other-vpn-providers-380-68-09-12.30851/.

I did tweak the "Custom Configuration" at the bottom and added a few things to it. I also set the "Auth Digest" to DEFAULT instead of "SHA1", that change got me about 5MB extra. This seemed to get me and extra 10MB of download speed versus what is in the link above. I have spectrum 100MB service with Asus RT_AC68W router, I am getting about 30 MB down with these settings.  I don't know what all of these settings blow do but it seems to work and my internet is encrypted.
