PIA + Win 8.1 Update 1 + Frostwire

edited May 2014 in P2P Support
I recently installed Win 8.1 Update 1 (Spring Update) and have found that Frostwire (and other torrent P2P programs) no longer work if I bring up PIA.  Have tried a multitude of various settings, in PIA & Frostwire, to no avail.   Actually, all of the P2P programs sit there with zero bytes being u/l'd or d/l'd.

I would back out Win 8.1 U1 but all other applications run just fine and this update did fix some "icks" with Win 8.1 that I need.  It's just the P2P apps. that don't work.
HELP!

  • It's not 8.1 it's pia being blacklisted with many torrent sites so you can't connect. I assume there server is timing out and you can't connect?
  • Hmm, is it just a coincidence that all this started as soon as I installed W8.1 Update 1?

As soon as PIA connects to their server all transfers cease.  If I exit PIA all xfers, to the swarm, resume.
  • Sigh, per PIA support I did exactly that - didn't make any difference.  :(

PIA Support just gave me what appears to be the solution:
Invoke Port Forwarding in PIA & the client (+ plus router, if needed?).  PIA & FW are now playing nicely with each other in the sandbox.

    THANKS PIA Support Team!

otoh: per the PIA website, Port Forwarding reduces privacy.  How much?  I don't know.  If a lot, then this is not a reasonable work around.
  • Assume it's minimal until studies or papers surface with actual numbers.
