VPN No longer "auto" connects

Hi,

Just so we don't waste time - Please look on the latest google playstore reviews on the latest PIA android update - Many people complaining about the VPN not "auto" connecting when network changes and they have to manually reconnect the VPN - Even the "killswitch" doesn't inform them that their internet is not using VPN (when network changes i.e. wifi goes off in doze then on again)

Basically this is what happens I figured it out.. When my phone is off and not in use - the wifi switches off to switch battery. When I use my phone, the wifi reconnects but the vpn does not. I never had this problem before - The VPN in the past used to auto reconnect when my wifi did - Now the VPN does NOT auto reconnect and I have to manually connect it.

Please don't waste my time suggesting it's a problem on my part - I can assure you I have taken every single procedure and measure and step to make sure it's not a problem with my phone or my settings or whatever

It is NOT a coincidence that after the latest update there are people on the playstore reviews complaining about the EXACT SAME thing of the app not auto-reconnecting and them having to manually reconnnect it. This is a STRONG indication that this is a problem with the latest app update. Let's not waste 3 weeks discussing the possibility It's my phone beacuse of the model or root or other apps conflicting blah blah blah blah blah and @PIA start looking into this shit bruh

  • I have taken the time to even screenshot what people are saying on the playstore that is the same problem as me - and this is ONLY after the latest update - This problem did NOT exist before the update.

  • @TheLynx1, this is an issue the dev team is aware of, and they're working actively to fix it as soon as possible.

At the moment, the only resolution is to downgrade. You can find the older version on apkmirror here. I've suggested that we keep older versions of the application on our site, but it is safe to use the apkmirror version because Android applications are signed. If it was altered in any way, it wouldn't install on top of the existing version.

  • I'm not sure if mine is the same problem but I have the PIA client installed on my Samsung Galaxy S7 and also a Galaxy Tab A6. Both have recently had the same problem. PIA seems to block internet access until it is manually restarted. I have both set to "Connect on boot". Previously I have had no issues with it. In recent weeks, however, after the device has not been used for a few hours, if I try to access the internet whether through any browser or email client, it will not connect until I manually disconnect and reconnect PIA. After that it works fine... until the next time. Very frustrating.

  • @phil996bp Have you tried excluding the PIA app from battery optimizations?

This issue with reconnections when changing networks should have been resolved, so what might be happening is if you haven't been using your phone for a while it is probably entering Doze mode and causing the VPN to disconnect without the app noticing. So for a moment after you wake it up it haven't noticed it has lost its VPN session with the server and that needs to timeout first before it will attempt reconnecting at all.

I've forgotten the VPN on on my Galaxy S7 so I'd say it's working fine for me, but it has LineageOS on it so if there's something specific to Samsung I won't see it.
  • I can confirm what @Max-P says in my situation, i dont know if it applies to your phone issue. What am i talking about? Well, i dont stay in the U.S. currently ,  but i still listen to Pandora. After the latest update, while listening to my comedy playlist, when the android phone used to go into battery saver mode and screen would turn off, suddenly my playlist would stop working. Turns out PIA disconnected, and Pandora would throw up a msg saying wrong country or something.
The solution was that i went into the settings, and turned off any battery-saver settings that android had for PIA, and after i did this, even when the phone screen would turn off, my Pandora playlist would continue to play.
