Should I update PIA?

edited March 2018 in Mac OS X VPN Setup
I am currently running v65 on a Mac. It's working OK, but should I update to the newest version? If so, how do I do that? Going by the most recent posts, there seem to be some horrendous problems between Macs and PIA v77. Is there something magical in the difference between v65 and v77, or should I leave things well alone since they're running OK at the moment?

I have a late 2012 Mac Mini Server running High Sierra 10.13.3.

  • The problems were with version v76 and have since been fixed in v77. For most users v77 is working perfectly fine.

I would generally recommend to keep it updated to make sure you're safe as newer versions brought some updates including newer SSL/TLS versions and protection against some downgrade attacks, but in terms of connectivity and VPN it's still the same OpenVPN behind it and all, so there isn't really any performance benefit to upgrade.

So, I wouldn't urgently feel the need to update but it's always a good idea. The upcoming v78 release (currently in beta) is a bit more worth it as it adds favorites and the ability to reconnect to another region without disconnecting first as well as some cosmetic changes :)

    Thank you Max-P.

Do I have to uninstall PIA.app, or simply replace the old app?

Edit: I installed v77 and used the rm -rf ~/.pia_manager/ line and restart instructions I found in another post. It seems to be working fine. Thanks again for your help.
  • Simply installing on top of the other should have worked fine, but full removal works too :)
