PIA Client hides traffic from local router?

Forgive the basic question, have tried searching for an answer but with no luck.

I am running latest PIA VPN on a Windows 10 laptop.  Connecting to the internet at my workplace via a Meracki router.

My question is, whilst I am running the VPN, is my activity visible/being logged by the router?  I know they will see "something" is happening, that's cool.  I just want to check if they can see what sites I am looking at.

Can anyone help me please?

Many thanks in advance.

  • Provided that you are connected to the VPN, and provided that your web browser isn't configured to use a proxy server on the same (local) network as your laptop, then the router should not know what sites you visit.

All the router should see is encrypted traffic flowing between your laptop's IP address and the PIA VPN gateway you're connected to.

If you visit https://www.privateinternetaccess.com/ when connected to the VPN - if you see "You are protected by PIA" at the top of the page - you should be safe.

  • Dont take my word for it, im no expert. That being said, IF its a work-provided laptop, IT is in full control of CA (Certificate Authority)  management and installation of company CA into windows, effectively allowing them to spy on encrypted traffic as well. Basically, in your browser, click the lock icon, and examine the CA. Do this when you are connected with your work laptop, and your personal home laptop. If both certs are like Comodo etc, you are fine. You you see some unexpected names in there, then its a CA of the company, and in that case, leave your work laptop to do only work related stuff.
