Basic Questions - P2P/Port Forwarding etc.

1.) I'm aware that PIA doesn't keep data logs, but based on a past conversation
I had with someone at PIA, they recommended certain locations
over others when using BiTorrent. (This was 3+ years ago though so maybe
things are different now.) If I remember correctly, 2 of those locations
were Sweden and Switzerland. Am I allowed to use any geographic location
for BitTorrent or is it still advisable that I use select few locations?
I really don't remember the rationale for using these locations, but there
you have it.

2.) I read that you can have a toal of 5 devices connected to PIA at the same time.
Does this mean I can have 5 devices from different geographic locations
around the world connected at once to different PIA geographic locations
at the same time?

3.) qBittorrent uses port 8999. Am I able to port forward/open this port
in PIA? From looking at a guide online I didn't see an option to do this.

Or do I need to port forward 8999 in my modem/router combo instead of PIA?

Or am I/should I change this qBittorent port to something else?

Thanks

  • Hi! Sorry for the delays.

    1) That would likely be because those regions supports port forwarding within PIA. Not all regions allows port forwarding, this is why you were likely suggested those. Please note that at the moment, Sweden and Netherlands also temporarily don't support port forwarding due to connectivity issues with the datacenter. See the Port Forwarding section from the downloads page for an up to date list of port forwarding enabled regions!

    2) We're somewhat flexible with how count those devices, but the generally accepted rule is 5 different connecting IPs. This is because we support router setups, so it would be a bit backwards to let you have 20 devices behind one router count as one but trying to connect all those devices individually would bust your limit. This is an abuse protection system, so as long as you don't abuse and put your whole family on your account you will be fine.

    3) No. The ports we assign are randomly generated and cannot be predicted. You need to change the port in qBittorrent to the one PIA gives you upon connecting.
