SOLVED:Will changing my DNS service have a security related detrimental effect on my PIA connection?

edited April 2018 in VPN Setup Support
I would like to switch my router and all my phones and computers (Linux & Windows) away from my ISP's DNS to the new Cloudflare DNS offering that was just announced (better speed and privacy, and no logs), and use Google's DNS as a backup.  When connected to PIA, does PIA use it's own DNS? If so, security wise or otherwise, is it a bad thing to select my own DNS when connected to PIA?

  • Yes, PIA does come with its own DNS. They are 209.222.18.222 and 209.222.18.218.

We recommend using those for performance reasons as each VPN server has its own DNS server responding to those addresses, so they are in theory the fastest possible and are also tuned for privacy.

You shouldn't lose any security if you choose to use CloudFlare's new DNS service, however please note that if CloudFlare ends up blocking this PIA IP due to spam from other users your DNS may end up not working so keep that in mind for later on! You will also be giving CloudFlare information about every website that you visit. Whether this is a bad thing or not is up to you!

SOLVED: Thanks for those addresses.  After looking into this further, I see using nslookup that when not connected to PIA my computers use the Cloudflare DNS (Google DNS as a backup).  When connected to PIA they use PIA's DNS.  I didn't realize it worked that way, and that is what I was hoping.
