Settings for better speed?

Hi All,

I have Spectrum 100/10 running thru a Netgear R7000 (factory firmware) router. Without PIA running I can get 112/12 over Ethernet and 105/11 over WiFi. Those speeds drop to 18/9 at best over WiFi when I have PIA running. Some of the servers can only muster up 9/9 or so. There's got to be something I'm overlooking! Had eidt the enclosed pic to fit all settings on it...

  • Change 'Connection type' to "udp" will help alot, I would also turn "Off" 'Enable debug mode', try these 2 settings for now & see what happens...
  • Definitely turn the connection type setting to UDP. If you're willing to risk a man in the middle attack, you can also turn off data authentication, but I am not completely sure that will increase your speed or not (a lot of factors to consider in that one.) Turning off debug mode is a good idea unless you are running into a bug in which case you can always turn it back on.
  • i agree on the UDP part 100%      google the difference between the 2 and it will help make more sense

also i find having to change servers quite often as they get overloaded pretty quick, and its just going to get worse the more people that subscribe

Tried these 2 changes and still stuck at 20, and that's after checking 8 or 10 different servers.

I use www.speedtest.net and it always shows as coming from LogicWeb even though the IP's are different. Each server has a 1-5 star rating and do they ever vary! Anyone know what this rating means? I've tried 1 star and 5 star servers and neither is much different than the others...

This is certainly a 'head-scratcher', have you ever subscribed to another VPN provider? Were the speed test results different? Could you try using the OpenVPN gui insread of PIA's app and see what happens, maybe their app is not playing nice with your system. Here's the instructions; https://www.privateinternetaccess.com/pages/client-support/windows-openvpn
  • OK, I tried OpenVPN and it was waaay slower. I'm getting to the point of not being able to use a VPN of any kind. I've got 100/10 service, can get 115/12 w/o any VPN running, cannot justify using a program that costs me between 80 and 95% of my bandwidth. BTW, this is my first attempt at VPN. Here's what I got tonight with OpenVPN:

  • Now I'm wondering if it's either Spectrum or their "free" no strings attached modem. My old Motorola 4121 was Docsis 3.0 and worked fine, the tech who came out for my speed issues swapped it for an Arris TM1602A telephony modem which I didn't really need or want...

It's probably your ISP throttling VPNs then. Do you have friends/neighbours etc nearby who have a differnent ISP where you can try connecting your 'laptop'? & running some speed tests? Or just contact your ISP & ask/complain about VPN throttling.
  • No, we're all on Spectrum here. I'll go without and wait for the obscurity update, I've got a 2 yr deal on PIA...

  • Well, after a couple days of things getting slower and slower (with neither PIA or OpenVPN actively running), I finally uninstalled both and now I'm back over 100/10 again. Gotta say, very disappointed! Now I see there's a beta FF browser extension available but cannot find it. I'd like to give this a try before I give up for good...

I have the same modem (TM1602A) and I'm pretty sure it's the problem. I'm having the same problem with my 300mbps upgrade. I'll get 60mbps down with PIA on and normal speeds with it off. Never had this problem with my Arris TM822.

    Update:
After doing some more poking around I also found out that this modem is in the middle of a class action lawsuit. Due to the chip set it uses which is Puma 6 Chipset. Fun stuff it looks like you're in the market for a new modem....so am I. /sigh
  • I've still got my old Motorola 6141 boxed up, may give it a try. It's a Docsis 3.0, the tech swapped it out but said it would have worked fine. Still pondering on his reason for swapping it since I owned the Moto and he gave me the Arris, no strings...

  • Reinstalled the old Moto 6141, still getting 110/12-ish with no VPN, best I'm seeing with PIA is a little over 10% rated speed. I *could* try this on a different computer, but what would be the point? This is the one I use...

  • Found I could test turning off all encryption. This is listed as "fastest" in PIA's default setup guide.

    All Speed No Safety

    Data encryption: None

    Data authentication: None

    Handshake: ECC-256k1

    This is the result:

Somehow, just having PIA running is killing my system even though it's doing little if anything. I guess just trafficking thru their servers is the problem?

I'm having the same problem. I've had PIA for 2 years (my 3rd year is about to start next month) I've never have any problems with my service. My speed tests are 120 without and 40 with (Ethernet) 115 without and 20 with (WiFi). Ive tested on Speedtest.com and also Xfinity speedtest (I have Comcast as my internet provider) on both Google Chrome and Firefox. It does the same on my Android devices (Phone and TV Boxes) as well. I've switched servers and usually gets lower speeds. As low as 5 with it on. I just use the speed test on PIA's website.
  • There's prolly a setting or two somewhere in Windows we're overlooking. My son has the same modem, Win7 (x?), and provider. He's about 8 blocks away and gets ~ 80% of 100/10 thru Ethernet with PIA. Too bad no one here has any ideas. I'll give a while to see and then cancel...
