ISP Detecting BitTorrent Traffic with VPN

Within the last week or two my ISP has figured out how to identify BitTorrent traffic while I'm connected to PIA.  I've done a little experimenting and am certain this isn't an issue with exceeding any sort of bandwidth cap.  I can still download large files on and off the VPN without any throttling.

Right now I'm using the PIA client on Windows 10 with Deluge.  The killswitch has always been enabled and I also have a script set up that kills Deluge whenever network change occurs. I've passed all the leak tests listed here.  Encryption is enabled and forced on Deluge.

Is this the end of BitTorrent?

  • You could try changing switching between UDP and TCP, and also change the port from Auto to something else like 443

That was the first thing I tried but there was still throttling.  Seemed to work for a couple of hours tho.

This is really odd since I'm with a very small ISP.  I'm not sure if I'm messing something up.
  • I doubt you are messing anything up. Since you said you are using a small ISP they may notice that there is a constant stream of data flow headed your way. They cannot see what the data is unless they have your cipher key. I doubt that also. I would think, as I mentioned, you have an unusual amount of data between you and the PIA server. And that is causing them to suspect you are doing something other than just browsing.
  • Yeah you're probably right. I'll give torrenting a break and try to change my habits in the future.
