Frequent disconnections from the Internet

Fairly new to PIA - have been using it for about a week now. on macOS and iOS

Very frustrated with frequent disconnections WHILE i'm using the Internet, relatively shortly after the connection is made. I would often lose internet connection while watching a youtube video or while I'm typing something up. For example I have lost both the first and second drafts for this post due to this (had to refresh the page).

This occurs on both OS's, and let me just be completely clear, when this happens, the PIA app icon would still show that VPN is connected, but i would not have any internet connection. Sometimes the app automatically reconnects once it senses something is wrong, but most times I have to manually reconnect to a server.

Also on the iOS app, i could not connect to anything within the app, but thru a manually set up L2TP VPN within Settings.

I do think I should mention that I am using the VPN in mainland China. Dont think that would make any difference but then again wouldn't be surprised if it does.

    Being located in China is sadly most likely the cause of your issues yeah... The way the great firewall works is mostly unknown and what we know about it comes from researchers doing research project on it. What's likely going on there, especially as it affects L2TP too, it probably flags the connection as suspicious when you connect to it and later one when one of the bots comes in to inspect the connection it gets a valid VPN handshake and mark it as a VPN server and starts blocking it.

    Another possibility is that they're trying to discourage the use of VPNs by making them die off after a short while so people can't leave them on all the time and have to keep fighting with it.

    Honestly if you are in mainland China, forget about L2TP protocol, my personal exp. only clients with OpenVPN support would actually work - most of the time.

    Hello All! I am sorry to hear your not able to connect in mainland China. We do have OpenVPN for PIA. If you would like to give it a test, I will be more than happy to assist you with the set up. I will need to know the Operating system and its version you want to try out first. However, if OpenVPN based VPN connections fail to work in a given region (e.g., our app), use of an L2TP VPN may bypass these blocks.

    The method by which you can set this up differs depending on your device, and what operating system/firmware is on it. If you can provide us with this info for the device you want to configure it on, we'll be happy to give you the instructions on how to do so, if available.     I have had PIA for a long time and have never had problems with it.  Now I cannot keep the program connected without being outright denied or even the program being completely kicked off of android.  It works great on my Mac laptop, but hardly or doesn't work at all on my android phone.  I have tried UDP, TCP, different ports.  I have many more problems when I try to connect through the program while using cellular only.  Is there a ban?  If not, what is going on.  I don't have to explain why I got this application for my phone.  Anyone??

    Hello!

    Thank you for the inquiry. We actually just released a new version of the application (v1.2.1). Can you please uninstall PIA completely, reboot the device, then reinstall 1.2.1? A full uninstall/reinstall  (not an upgrade) needs to be completed as many bugs and fixes were resolved with this issue. However if the same issue returns after installing 1.2.1, please let us know. - PIA CS TEAM
