Adwcleaner detects PUP in System Registry

When I run Adwcleaner, 2 PUPs are detected in the System Registry. Both PUPs are PIA DNS nameserver IP addresses.

PUP.Optional.Legacy             HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\Interfaces\{2B3DCD27-5A97-4F48-B6A4-0D93C6A92957}|DhcpNameServer - "209.222.18.218"
PUP.Optional.Legacy             HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\Interfaces\{2B3DCD27-5A97-4F48-B6A4-0D93C6A92957}|DhcpNameServer - "209.222.18.222"

I know these are harmless, but I am not sure why PIA App is writing to my System Registry. Can anyone shed some light on this?

Thanks

  • Seems like PIA is not writing directly to the registry. This is just the key where Windows stores the network settings, so it's to be expected that PIA's DNS servers ends up there. If you check other keys in HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\Interfaces\ you'll also find your regular adapter along with its IP configuration and everything.
  • Cool. Thought it was nothing to worry about, just curious. Thanks Max!
