SOCKS5 or VPN for torrenting?

Hello everyone!

What is more robust in terms of privacy for torrenting SOCKS5 or VPN? 
I got busted by my ISP recently (was not using PIA) and don't want to be busted again.

I have PIA installed on my mac and SOCKS5 set up in utorrent.

    I use both.

    I use the VPN for security and anonymity and SOCKS5 for "speed" and added anonymity. (Sometimes I might even throw TOR in the mix for the fun of it).The SOCKS5 does not have the encryption that VPN has so anyone watching in will see what your are doing. Even though the SOCKS5 gave you a different IP address, the data is open. Going with the VPN will encrypt your data so anyone watching will see only gibberish. Now, they can assume you are doing something but they will not know what the content is.
