I'm not in Japan!

For some reason I do not understand, some websites seem to think I'm in Japan. I'm in Australia and I'm using an Australian PIA server, albeit in a different city to the one I'm in. If I'm not logged in to ebay it will give me prices in Japanese Yen. Even the New York Times will give me sub headings in Japanese.

Why?

  • Stale GeoIP data. Even though IPs don't have any inherent location, websites use GeoIP databases to approximate the locations of IP addresses. This Australia/Japan issue pops up every now and again, but when I check aggregate GeoIP information, these IPs do appear to be registered properly. Unfortunately, this issue is probably down to the websites you're visiting updating failing to update their databases regularly, so you're being detected in Japan even though the IPs haven't been registered there for quite a while.
  • Hi colleen, OK. So are you saying that the IP's that PIA uses in Australia were at one time registered in Japan?
