Ver 79 client: "Ruby crashed unexpectedly"

I bit the bullet and finally updated from V74 to V79 over the weekend and the last two mornings I have awoken to my machine (2015 MBP running macOS 10.12.6) with a dialog box that "ruby unexpectedly quit".  I thought you guys had this fixed by now?  A section of the problem report is below.  Looks like I have to go back to version 74 to feel safe my VPN won't be disconnecting overnight leaving me vulnerable.

Comments

  • No comment from PIA (or anyone else) on this?  As a followup, I reverted to V74 and no Ruby issues for two days now.  Will this issue get fixed so I can update someday?
  • @vpnuser56, thank you very much for the crash report. I've passed it along to the developers for further analysis.
  • Thank you - much appreciated.
  • Since I see no responses - should I open a formal ticket on this?
  • I just reached out to one of our desktop devs, and he confirmed that they should have a fix for this rolled out in the very near future. Sorry for the delay!
  • Thanks for the update Colleen!
  • Does the Ver 80 client have a fix for this?  I don't see anything about it in the release notes.
  • @vpnuser56, nope, no changes in this version.

I reached out to the devs, and, unfortunately, they let me know that they ran into some roadblocks, and this one is unlikely to be fixed until we open-source the desktop client. I'd suggest using Tunnelblick in the meantime.

  • I tested out Tunnelblick...it is 2x slower downloading compared to the PIA client (which itself is way slower than not using PIA servers).  An example - these tests were carried out within 5 minutes of each other.

US East Server:  TB client 28Mbps down/ 20Mbps up, PIA client 63Mbps down/20Mbps up
US NYCity Server:  TB client 29Mbps down/ 17Mbps up, PIA client 64Mbps down/21Mbps up

    No VPN connection : 271Mbps down/ 23Mbps up

    1)  I guess I'll stick with V74 of the PIA client for now (no Ruby crashes)
    2)  Why is PIA so slow compared to not using PIA?
